An Evening with Dan Snow at the Theatre Royal Winchester

On the evening of Saturday 14 January, Winchester Rotary hosted a fundraiser at the Theatre Royal on behalf of our two lead charities for 2022-23.  It was a highly entertaining evening at which popular television presenter Dan Snow, AKA “The History Guy”, spoke about his growing up in a family obsessed with history, his career, and much about the trip led by Ernest Shackleton to the South Pole in 1914 – 1917. Dan is a gifted speaker and did so without notes or images but still brought the adventures to life. He also spoke briefly about his successful trip to the Antarctic last year to find Shackleton’s ship Endurance.

Before Dan spoke, President Deborah Macartney had introduced Sue McKenna, CEO of Winchester Trinity and Lady Edwina Grosvenor, founder of Hope Street, who gave brief updates on the work they are both leading in the field of supporting women suffering abuse, which was the need we were supporting. The Theatre had kindly agreed to give us its services at cost and Dan Snow gave his time without charge. As a result, and whilst a final figure is not yet not available, we anticipate a net profit in the region of £8,000. We are also extremely grateful to Shentons Solicitors for their generous sponsorship.

Many thanks to Anthony Arkwright who put the evening together with help and support from Shelagh Bird and Gill Russell.
