Following the devastating category 4 Hurricane Beryl, Winchester Rotary donated approximately £1,500 in December 2024 to help refurbish a senior citizens care home on the small island of Carriacou, part of Grenada.
A 2 Phase recovery initiative was launched. Phase 1 prioritised urgent structural repairs to the roof, doors, windows and electrical systems to the home. Residents could now be safely reinstalled in their care home.
Phase 2 focused on internal refurbishment, transforming the facility into a safer, more comfortable, dignified living environment.
The total cost of the project was US$80,000. This was made possible through a District Response Grant from the Rotary Foundation, funding from Rotary District Disaster Relief Committee, (District 7030), support from international sponsors, contributions from the Rotary Clubs in Grenada, others in the District, plus Winchester Rotary. Winchester Rotary’s donation of £1,500, including a donation of £500 received from Riviera Travel, (10% of a recent trip), went towards Phase 2.
A formal handover ceremony took place in August 2025, attended by government officials, local citizens and Rotarians. Considerable thanks and appreciation was expressed to all those who had been involved in the project, whether working hands on, providing moral support, or crucially, giving financial donations.
