Concert for Ukraine – 15 April 2023

Again in partnership with St Lawrence Church, we were delighted to host another fundraising event for aid to Ukraine. The lunchtime concert took place on Saturday 15 April.  On this occasion, the emphasis was on music.  We heard particularly from accomplished jazz accordionist Volodymyr Vasylenko who opened the concert with his wife cellist Anna Monastyrka.  They gave an emotional rendering of the Ukrainian National Anthem.  Volodymyr performed several solo pieces and also accompanied the singers.

Lala Smaglova, a Ukrainian ethnic folk singer performed traditional songs and we also heard 10-year-old Zarina Ivanova – who has already won several prizes in Ukrainian and international competitions.  Her rendition of the John Lennon classic, “Imagine” at the end of the concert, was especially moving.  Dancer Anna Paniotova, who also teaches dance, performed a folk dance, again with Volodymyr as accompanist.

We were delighted to welcome again the children’s choir with a performance of a folk song and the Eurovision winner “Stefania”.  The church was full and standing, Winchester Rotary President Deborah Macartney, opened the concert, welcoming the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Angela Clear, who thanked the performers at the end.

A retiring collection was held, which has raised over £1800 for the International Medical Corps – War in Ukraine, a charity chosen by the performers.  Our particular thanks go to Beauman Chong, churchwarden at St Lawrence.
