Cultural/networking event for refugees at ARC Winchester

On Saturday 6 August, in collaboration with Winchester Muslim Cultural Association (WMCA) and Winchester City of Sanctuary, we helped organise an event which brought together the various refugee communities in our city.

In recent months a number of Ukrainian refugees have come to Winchester – joining those from Syria, Afghanistan and Hong Kong.  The idea came from WMCA, of which Winchester Rotarian Miff Kayum is secretary.  The Syrian community provided the food and there was a performance of Ukrainian dances and songs. The singing of the Ukrainian national anthem brought tears to many eyes.   Miff worked with Beth Flint of City of Sanctuary to bring the event about and Beth and President Deborah thanked those who had attended  We are shortly taking a group to Marwell Zoo and Beth gave notice of a further cultural event in the Cathedral in November.   We were delighted that a reporter from the Hampshire Chronicle came along, having made contact earlier in the day, and his report is on the Chronicle website – it can be seen here, and includes a short video:  Hampshire Chronicle report
