Dinner Meeting 23rd October 2023

President Les, back on ‘dinner duty’ following his short absence, welcomed our guests:  District Governor George Phillips, our two speakers, Maddy Thomson, Matron of the Winchester Hospice and Jo Westerman, Fundraising Officer for Winchester Hospice, and Anna O’Brien, Chair of Trustees/Volunteer at Winchester Radio.

Following the general business announcements, Maddy Thomson gave a presentation outlining the services of the Winchester Hospice, provided by dedicated staff and volunteers. Since its doors opened in September 2021, the hospice has cared for nearly 600 patients. A wide range of services is offered to both inpatients and outpatients in their homes, including community support.

Jo Westerman then outlined the fundraising needs and opportunities to support the hospice, which is 65% funded by the NHS, leaving 45% to be raised via donations from the public domain – a considerable challenge.

Rotarian Diana Brooks introduced her latest children’s picture book – Sophie Swan to the Rescue – all sales proceeds, except printing costs, will be donated the the hospice. My thanks and appreciation to a  number of members present who bought copies of Sophie Swan or donated to the hospice. The money is already deposited in the Rotary CAF bank where it will earn 25% gift aid. Please do all you can to support our precious Winchester Hospice – any one of us may need such specialist care one day.

District Governor, George Philips gave us an outline of the help, money and services which are there through District for all Rotary Clubs.  As he said, ‘District is here for you.” He reminded us that there is Foundation money available for appropriate Rotary projects.  He was very complimentary about the amount of projects and community service we carry our every year.  When he read out the list – it was impressive!

May we thank you District Governor for your visit.

The evening closed at  approximately 9.00pm.

Diana Brooks
