It is that time of year again!
On Friday, January 31st a small team of three Rotarians: New member Peter Dingley, Dave Stewart and Mark Butcher, along with 3 volunteers: Anna Stewart, Dave Pearson and Alison Chase took part in the first Disease resistant Elm tree planting of the 2025 season at St. Swithun’s school.
The team, with the help of pupils planted 16 saplings, a mixture of Ademuz and Letuce varieties.
As previously, the pupils took the opportunity to decorate and even name their trees. They named this one “Roty”, pronounced “row tee” in recognition of the Rotary logo on my Gillet.
This will be followed by further planting sessions at:
- Kingsworthy Primary School
- Royal Winchester Golf Club
- Twyford water meadows
- Winchester Cathedral
Special mention to Dominic Hiscock who helped Dave collect and deliver the trees to St. Swithun’s.
Hampshire Forest Partnership, who supply the trees were so pleased with what we achieved last year, plus the fact that we have managed to engage the Cathedral this year, that they have rewarded us with much bigger saplings than we had last time, all of which adds to the challenge and the excitement.
