For our 4th Monday social evening at the Golden Lion, we went “in house”. We are often unaware of the wealth of expertise and knowledge within the ranks of our members.
The meeting began with a short period of club business, during which we were sorry to hear from Youth Lead Maggie Hastie, that the team from Western School have had to withdraw from the upcoming District Final of the Youth Debate competition. President Paul Russell then introduced our own Dr Kordo Saeed, Consultant Microbiologist at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Southampton.
Kordo’s presentation was on the increasing risks associated with antimicrobial resistance. He explained in a very accessible way the problems we are facing, as overuse lowers resistance. Much of the problem arises from inappropriate practices in hygiene and the lack of sterile conditions. A number of interesting questions were raised and we all left the meeting feeling more aware – but concerned. It was a very informative and interesting evening.
