Could you possibly imagine that Nick Bell could fill a wheelbarrow with weeds or that Luke Addison would feed and handle a clutch of chickens? But that is what happened on Thursday 11th September at the Hampshire Market Garden at Lockerley.
The Community Team had been invited to view the project that had been set up a few years ago. We had a tour of the four-acre site to see exactly what was being produced and how it was funded.
Also present were five young refugees who had been brought along from Winchester by two people representing the City of Sanctuary support team and the Hub from St Peter’s Church, with a view to seeing if local refugees would benefit from volunteering in such an environment.
It was really interesting to see how the refugees, who spoke and understood minimal English, just got stuck in with hand forks – clearing a large patch of well-established weeds.
Whilst I did my bit of weed-clearing (I have more than enough in my own garden!), I enjoyed chatting to the management team to learn of their future plans.
