Joint Meeting with Inner Wheel 13 March 2023

On Monday 13 March Winchester Rotary and Inner Wheel members were treated to a very interesting talk by Daphne Vaughan, who Gill Russell and I had first met at the charity Christmas card shop in 2021.

Although nervous at being faced with quite a large audience, Daphne spoke to us about her love of both making art and teaching others to make art. She was especially enthusiastic regarding her love of rows – featuring her classic views of Winchester buildings but also different takes on rows of beach huts. Please see the Portfolio on her website for further examples https://dvstudio17.com/#nil Daphne ran the art department at Prince’s Mead School and, after leaving that role, continued to teach both children and adults.

Tragically Daphne’s only son Tom died in 2019 in Santa Monica, California. Although he had great plans for the future he was suffering from anxiety. After walking into the sea to calm himself he was caught in a rip tide and did not survive. Daphne and Tom’s friends have set up the “Know Thyself Charitable Trust”. https://www.knowthyselfcharity.com/ to improve and maintain well-being in workplaces and education in the UK and USA. A very important mission especially with staff shortages, staff illness and early retirement being so prevalent in the UK at the moment.

All in all, a fascinating and very moving evening.
