More progress at the Olivers Battery Environment Fayre

Following-on from our success at the previous week’s Winchester Green Fair, 6 of our members: Caroline Rubin, Dominic Hiscock, Les Haswell, Dave Stewart, Colin Cook and Mark Butcher formed a rota to run a stand at the inaugural Olivers Battery Environment Fayre, on Saturday 27th September.

Held on the battery itself, the event was split between St. Mark’s Church and a marquee outside. There were around 20 stands including organisations such as: RSPB, The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, WinACC, Repair Cafe Winchester, Butterfly Conservation, etc. It was opened by the Mayor and Honorary Rotarian Sudhakar Achwal.

We had a steady flow of interest and managed to sign-up another 8 people either for tree planting, or general projects. Just 3 fewer than the previous Saturday.

As a result of our combined efforts across these two events, we have now established two new distribution lists within the website emailing system. This enables us to send targeted emails to either:

  • General volunteers, or
  • Tree planters

Following these two successful events, well now look back at the experience and see what we can learn, so that we can improve what we do. I prime example at this event was the lack of a kind of stand-up notice board on which we could attach our major posters. We had them hanging off the front of our table, which meant they were ferquently obscured by people standing there.

If anybody has any suggestions, please add them as comments below this post.
