On Saturday 27th June Move Momentum gave an afternoon concert at Winchester University to publicise their work and also to raise some much needed funds. As the Community Team are considering supporting them this coming year, I responded to their request for help. The concert was a most positive experience.
The majority of their members live with either physical or mental disabilities, and many with both..They don’t let this stop them from performing and participating in all sorts of dance. There were 12 Acts of varying types, including a solo performance from a brave young lady living with Downs Syndrome. Blue Apple were also represented as guests, performing their own theatrical pieces. There was also a guest appearance from Florians who are all able bodied, but much younger.
These young people all performed to a ticketed audience of around 60 people, who clearly all appreciated the effort put into the afternoon.
My duties were to sell raffle tickets and organise the draw. This was quite straight forward, but while the performances were taking place, I was given a backstage job ensuring all the performers were ready to go on stage when their turn came! That really was an eye opener as they all readily shared their nerves and determination to give their best performance!
It was certainly a very moving and different experience which makes one aware of what wonderful events are happening in Winchester that we can be part of if we choose.
I sincerely hope that we can support this group in various ways this Rotary year. I will be asking the Community Team to report on the outcome of our discussions with them in a couple of weeks time.
