Mulching fun in the sun

On Thursday, May 7th the following 5 members returned to the Hinton Ampner estate, not to plant trees this time, but to mulch them and as a result protect them from drying out, being attacked by little critters, etc:

  • Paul Russell
  • Derek O’Neill
  • Peter Dingley
  • Tony “King of the pile” Catesby
  • Mark Butcher

Working alongside a team of regular National Trust volunteers, we managed to mulch at least 1,000 of the trees that were planted during the Winter.

The team quickly established a process with Tony and Mark on the trailer filling the bins below for the rest of the team to wheel away and mulch the individual saplings.

It was definitely harder work than the tree planting, with all of us feeling we’d had a good workout, but it was well worth it. Hopefully we’ll be able to move in the morning!

Our next mulching session is on Tuesday, May 26th. If you’re interested in joining us, see here for details.
