October Breakfast Meeting

Our breakfast meetings returned on 23 October. After a run through of upcoming business and events – in particular the fact that the following day would be World Polio Day and that we we would be planting purple crocuses in the city to raise awareness of the End Polio campaign.

Shoeboxes are being sorted, organised by Colin Cook and will soon be ready for despatch. We also heard an update on another successful Clarendon Marathon.

Chair Rob Carter introduced our “10 minute speaker” – Beauman Chong, Churchwarden at St Lawrence Church in the centre of the city. Beauman concentrated on the historical role of this tiny church – built on the site of the Chapel Royal of William the Conqueror’s Palace and having its origins in the 11th century. Today, as well as its services, it hosts conceerts and events (some of which have been our own).

On the negative side, it sometimes attracts what culd be regarded as unwanted visitors and damage has occurred – but it is also a haven of peace for those needing a place of quiet in a busy world.

A fascinating talk, and we are very gratul to Beauman for coming along.

Colin Cook, Rob Carter, Beauman Chong and Paul Russell
