Social meeting – 27 January 2025

Our second meeting of the month continues as a mainly social event and the venue, the Golden Lion in Alresford Road. This month we had two short presentations on club projects.

A few years ago, Cathedral Guide Pam Meir (known to several Winchester Rotary fellow guides) discussed with the authorities there the idea of “Dementia Tours”. A simplified tour, concentrating on a single aspect of Cathedral life. Accompanied by a friend, family member or carer, someone living with dementia could be introduced to the building – using a single point of focus. She discussed the idea further with club members Diana Brooks and Deborah Macartney, who at the time were part of our earlier initiative – the Dementia Cafe. As a result Winchester Rotary agreed to cover the entrance fees involved.

Three guests are taken on each tour by Pam, together with their companion, and the assistance of Diana and Deborah. The presentation demonstrated the enjoyment generated by the tours. A very worthwhile initiative, which we hope will continue.

Ian Valentine then spoke about the Stroke Support Club, held at Christ Church. It has proved very successful and some of the members have become involved in the organisation. However, more volunteers are needed to ensure it continues. Ian explained how initially 3-4 club members were involved, but more recently other volunteers are becoming involved. Rotary support is still needed to keep the club running.
