Unit 12 Garden Clearance – 24 February 2024

Nick Bell writes on behalf of the working party:

“On Saturday 24 February seven energetic, but not necessarily young, Rotarians, joined some of those occupying Unit 12 at Winnall as well as a University Student and others to give a total of 20 altogether to clear the garden behind the Unit of wood, cardboard, stone and cladding which had unfortunately accumulated over several years. It was no easy task made more difficult by the fact that the recent heavy rainfall had sodden the materials which promptly fell apart when they were picked up! However the assembled crew were not to be daunted and within just over an hour the two enormous Hippo bags were full (these had kindly been donated by Gareth Lloyd Jones the local franchisee). This led to inventive Rotarians booking slots at the recycling centre with their cars to dispose of the rubbish which was later collected . All in all by 12.00 the job had been completed and there was no need for the afternoon shift or indeed the intended session on Sunday.

This effort was of course part of the Unit 12 Project on which Winchester Rotary has embarked to provide a landscaped garden for the benefit of the occupiers of the Unit who are all social enterprises of one sort or another. Some will use it for teaching or therapeutic purposes. Winchester Rotary are providing sufficient funds for this to be done professionally but this part of the Project was suitable for us to action and obviously saved professional costs for the more complex work.

It is hoped that this landscaping will be started soon to catch hopefully the better Spring weather and we will be able to admire the fruits of our labour in the not too distant future and the occupiers of Unit 12 will have a much more pleasant enviroment in which to work and advance their projects. If any member would like further information please contact Clive Cook (project leader)”.
