Winchester Garrison Cocktail Party and Sounding Retreat

On Thursday, 28th July, 2022, Commandant and Garrison Commander, Brigadier Mike Caldicott CBE, welcomed many guests from a wide spectrum of the Winchester community to the annual Winchester Garrison Cocktail Party and Sounding Retreat. Guests included Mayor of Winchester Cllr Derek Green, Judge Angela Morris, Recorder of Winchester, and Chief Inspector Jon Turton, Winchester District Commander, Hampshire Police. A group of Winchester Rotary members were present, including President Deborah Macartney.

During this most enjoyable evening, drinks and canapés were served, accompanied by an excellent military band.

In contrast to some previous years, the evening red-gold sun shone on the lively outdoor party.  Old friends met again and new ones were made in a most convivial atmosphere.

Brigadier Mike Caldwell told us during his address that he was soon going to pastures new. He expressed his great sadness at the thought of leaving a garrison and the Winchester community with which he had experienced close ties and shared experiences. Rotarian Graham Topping thanked Brigadier Mike Caldwell for the support he has given Winchester Rotary as an Honorary Member and also to the community. Graham also thanked  Lt Col Stu Allen, Commanding Officer, and Nicola Day, (Nikki), Community Engagement Officer, for their support and help.

At the close of the evening, all present enjoyed the Sounding Retreat. True to tradition, and the clement weather, as the evening summer sun was setting the flag was slowly lowered as the National Anthem rang out across the fields of Worthy Down Station, Winchester.

Thank you, Brigadier Mike Caldicott and all those with you for your kind hospitality.
