Winchester Rotary Business Lunch – Wednesday 09 November 2022

This was our first Winchester Rotary Business Lunch since before the Covid Pandemic. It was attended by members from a wide spectrum of local organisations, including the business community, charity sector and local government.

The event, held at the city centre Wessex Hotel, was organised and hosted by Past President, Anthony Arkwright. Our current President, Deborah Macartney, together with Anthony, welcomed a number of distinguished guests including our speaker, Her Honour Judge Angela Morris, Resident Judge of Winchester and Salisbury Combined Courts, and Honorary Recorder of Winchester. Guests also included Brigadier Lee Daley, new Commandant DCLPA, Worthy Down, Professor Sarah Greer, Vice Chancellor of the University of Winchester, Alison Evans, COO of Winchester Cathedral, and Chief Inspector Jon Turton, District Commander, Hampshire Police.

The dining room was immediately buzzing with animated conversation and friendship. A most excellent lunch was followed by a talk given by Her Honour Judge Angela Morris. She gave us an insight into her background and entry into the legal profession through to her current position. This was interspersed with anecdotes relating to “interesting stories and incidents” along the way. She then took a number of questions on a variety of matters.

She reminded us of the forthcoming Winchester Combined Court Free Open Day which was cancelled in September due to the death of Her Majesty The Queen. It will now take place in March 2023. This is a great opportunity for students, parents, members of the public to learn more about how the Criminal Justice system operates.

Her Honour Judge Angela Morris concluded her presentation by expressing her admiration and appreciation for the work of Rotary in our community.

President Deborah brought the lunch to a close by giving a brief overview of our current community projects, including the many ways in which we have supported the people of Ukraine, and our forthcoming events to support her President’s charities for her year – Women’s Services at Winchester Trinity, and Hope Street, an organisation founded and supported by Lady Edwina Grosvenor, the High Sheriff of Hampshire. President Deborah mentioned our two main fundraising events in support of these charities – An Evening with Dan Snow, Saturday 14th January 2023 at the Theatre Royal and the Rotary Primrose Ball to be held on 17th March 2023.

This Winchester Rotary Business Lunch is an excellent opportunity to introduce ourselves to the public, make new friends and encourage new members.
