Winchester Rotary Christmas Dinner – 12 December 2022

The Wessex Hotel in the heart of Winchester, with the hospitality dining room beautifully decorated, was the background to our Winchester Rotary club annual Christmas dinner. Impeccably organised by Rotarian Robert Parsons, our Special Events Organiser.

President Deborah welcomed all present including Rachel Northover, Fundraising Manager for a registered charity called African Adventures, based in Eastleigh. In the developing areas of Ghana, Kenya, and Zanzibar the charity funds food security programmes in addition to school facilities and hygiene programmes that will benefit the children’s heath and education.

Rotarian Nick Bell and our young, Rotary sponsored Ugandan student, Thomas Bwambale, had met Rachel recently at a couple of Rotary events. Indeed, Rachel had attended our most recent breakfast meeting and told us something of her work.  At dinner, Nick facilitated a spontaneous raffle amongst those present to raise money for the children at one of the schools supported by African Adventures Foundation, to have a hot Christmas lunch. The target was to raise £125; however, the sum rose to £250. Lunch costs £1 for each child. This amount provided a Christmas lunch for a whole school.

We were ably entertained all evening by singer Marcus Boll from Alton, who specialises in jazz, swing and Ratpack. After dinner he circulated around the room, encouraging members to get up and dance. President Deborah had instructed us to bring our dancing shoes. It was obvious who had taken her seriously!

It was a lively, fun evening, enjoyed by all present.

Thank you President Deborah for your warm welcome, Robert for overseeing the evening and for all the guests who supported the event.
