Youth showcase – 14 July 2025

Our first meeting of the new Rotary year was mainly given over to our Youth Team, under the leadership of Maggie Hastie.

President Mark Butcher, presiding at his first meeting, welcomed a number of guests: Alexei Mostibrotski (father of Marta Mostybrotska) and Jessica Aucott and her family. Both Marta and Jessica had entered the Young Artist competition, where “Water” was the theme. Also with us was our scholar Thomas Bwambale. just returned with the latest team to visit Uganda, who gave the Rotaract report.

The presentation slides can be viewed here. Photos (courtesy of Colin Cook) of the presenters here.

As the Youth Team took us through their various activities, it became increasingly clear just how important the Youth Activities are – covering the arts, technology, public speaking, and personal development.

Reproduced below is the poem submitted by Micah Roujan, to the Young Writer competition.

At the end of the meeting some of the members of the recently returned Uganda team (Nick Bell, Deborah Macartney and Thomas Bwambale) presented a certificate of appreciation from the Rotary Club of Kasese Snow Peaks to President Mark.

Wonderful Water

Some take the gift of water as granted,
As though it were but one plain element.
A gift that’s not really that much needed
As if it’s just a nice experiment.
Even though it holds our lives together,
Able to murder whole humanity.
To bring life to nature altogether,
Though we mistreat this, it’s our specialty.
Earth is dying and it’s all our doing,
We’re trashing our lakes, even our oceans.
And what are we doing to help? NOTHING!
We don’t even show any emotion,
But we will still thrive and water will too.
It’s our fate, the path we’re meant to pursue.
