Mulching at Hinton Ampner

Event details

In an effort to help as many of the trees we have planted at Hinton Ampner survive the rigours of our much more varied weather, the National Trust team are in the process of mulching the saplings, and have asked for our help.

I will update the details below for where we’ll park, meet and mulch when I have the details from the National Trust team

For the first session, the plan is to park in the National Trust’s main car park and meet at the entrance way to the top part of the parking (go all the way around the loop, past visitor reception, to the top car park on your left), which is identified in the map below:

What you will need to bring:

  • Suitable footwear (Wellingtons, Sturdy boots, etc.).  A change of footwear is recommended as the mulch will stick to whatever you wear on yiur feet.
  • Gardening or other suitable gloves
  • Clothing for the weather conditions
  • Assuming it is going to be sunny, a hat and suntan lotion are recommended
  • There is a risk of ticks and the grass is long in places, plus some of the wild plants are on the spikey side, so shorts are not recommended
  • Snacks and lunch if appropriate.  Tea and biscuits will be provided, but you should probably take some water.

Where we’ll be mulching:

  • It is about a 20 minute walk from the house along one of the main walking routes around the estate, including the bluebell walk.
  • Please note that the only toilets are those by the House.  There is no portaloo at the mulching site.
