End Polio Now

Rotary is an international community that brings together leaders who step up to take on the world’s toughest challenges, locally and globally. The eradication of polio is one of our longest standing and most significant efforts. Along with our partners, we have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. We have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide and we won’t stop until we end the disease for good.

Overseas Scholarship

Winchester Rotary in partnership with Winchester University have created a scholarship to allow a student from Uganda to study at Winchester University at undergraduate level for up to 4 years. Our first candidate is from Great Lakes Peace Centre in Kasese Uganda, He has a placement commencing September 2023 on a four year course leading to a degree in Computer Science. Winchester Rotary need donations to help pay for tuition fees, and is seeking regular monthly donations throughout the course.

Disaster Recovery

Natural disasters occur all too often round the world but Rotary prides itself in doing as much as it can to support the recovery efforts, predominantly by making donations. So, anything you can give, either as a one-off or regularly, that we can pass on, would be so very appreciated by those affected the most by devastation to their property and lives as a whole.

These natural disasters could be floods, earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes/cyclones, fires. Typically, we donate to organisations such as ShelterBox, Water Survival Box, Aquabox, MapAction, Disaster Aid UK & Ireland, and also sometimes direct to Rotary Clubs in the locality of the disaster. The destination of the funds will depend on the nature of each disaster.

Winchester Stroke Support Club

Winchester Stroke Support Club is organised by Winchester Rotary, with help from the Stroke Association. The Club began on Zoom in September 2020, and switched to face-to-face meetings in October 2021. Meetings are on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays each month, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm in the Simeon Room at Christ Church, Christchurch Road, Winchester SO23 9SR. The Club raises funds to meet running costs, including payment for professional support for exercise sessions and speech therapy.

Friends of Gt. Lakes Peace Centre- Schools Project

As education is not free in Uganda, many children from deprived backgrounds do not go to school at all meaning they have no opportunity in life at all. This can be changed for just £10 per month per child for which you will receive a full report of your sponsored child’s progress twice a year. The children are carefully selected by Great Lakes Peace Centre which is operated voluntarily by Rotarians and therefore all of your money goes directly to the child’s education

Friends of Gt. Lakes Peace Centre- Music Project

The Music Project is part of the Education Project at Great Lakes Peace Centre in Kasese, Uganda. It started about 4 years ago as a way of encouraging children who were not at school and who were essentially disinterested in Education to come together to learn to play a musical instrument under the direction of a teacher and through that move together towards more traditional education. It has worked well and we presently have 4 pupils under the scheme who have now moved into traditional schooling also but still participate in the Music School and will soon form a band to help sustain the Project. It is hoped to raise £2,500 to keep the Project running for 2026.

Team Uganda visits to Gt. Lakes Peace Centre (GLPC)

For a number years Rotarians and other volunteers have been making successful visits to Uganda in support of existing and emerging humanitarian projects relating to the Great Lakes Peace Centre and the area around Kasese.

Team members fund their own travel and use these visits to continue these initiatives for the benefit of the Great Lakes and Kasese community. All donations are used to help fund the projects in Uganda, or to purchase items to take to Uganda in support of these projects.
